Question by : Should I take my parents’ car or buy my own?
So i have a little bit of a moral dilemma going on.
Long story short, my parents bought a 2nd car last April (2011 Nissan Sentra) just to realise a few months later that they really have no use for it. So now they’re thinking of giving it to me when i pass my driver’s license next January. The deal is that i will pay for insurance, maintenance and gas, while they will pay for the car itself. However i have a few problems with it.
First of all, my parents told me that since they’re paying for the car, it still belongs to them. So basically if they decide that all of a sudden they need it again, they will take it away from me even if i’m paying for the insurance, so i’ll be left without a car and without the cash to buy one. Then there’s just the fact that they’ll be paying 300$+ per month for it for another 5 years, i really feel uncomfortable about it, it feels like i’m joyriding on their back to the max having them pay so much for my wheels. And since i’m just entering college its very unlikely that i’ll find myself a job rewarding enough to take over the car payments before its payed off.
Then there’s the fact that i just don’t like the car very much. Its not fun at all to drive and quite ugly, i feel that i can do much better on the used car market.
So basically what i’m asking is am i crazy for not wanting this car? Its brand new, under warranty and will likely be very reliable for 5+ years, however i just don’t feel comfortable driving a car that i don’t actually OWN and that i don’t even really care about.
Should i tell my parents that i don’t want it and find myself a used car (my budget will be quite low… around 3000$) or take it?

From the sounds of it, you are the type of person that will take gratification in buying your own car. I would suggest that route since a)they can’t take it back b) you can choose the ride you want, not one already picked out.

Question by : Are they just being greedy?
I’m going home for a week from where I currently live and since you have to be 25 to rent a car where I’m going I was going to just get insurance on my parent’s car for that week since they said it wouldn’t be a problem.
However when they called their insurance company they said that they would charge them twice what they normally pay them because I’m a “young” driver (only have had my license around 2-3 years) and that I would have to have full coverage (which I know right there is a lie from the insurance company cause I have never had full coverage since I got my license ). Back when I was living with them my dad only had to pay a couple of hundred extra dollars for me to be insured on his truck also.
So I have a couple of questions. One, do you think they’re just trying to rip me off? Second, do you think I should just leave that insurance company alone and see if another family member with a different company will be able to get me insured with them for the week without me having to pay as much or call my parents insurance company out on it?
@first comment that still doesn’t explain that the same company only charged a couple hundred extra dollars for me to be insured on my dads truck back when I first received my license, yet that company now wants to charge double what their rate is now for me to do the exact same thing just a couple years later…
I realize the younger you are the more you have to pay for insurance, that really didn’t answer my question at all…

It is normal for younger drivers to pay more for insurance, because they are less experienced and more likely to have an accident. When you turn 25 the amount should decrease and then it should go down again when you get around 30. When you start getting older, however the prices go up. This is because the insurance provider reasons that inexperienced drivers and older drivers are more likely to have an accident.

Question by : What can I do to make up a recent car accident (financially) to my parents?
I currently am driving under a Learner’s Permit and have been since last December (I’ll take my driver’s practical test this October). I’m generally a VERY safe and cautious driver, and have never had an accident before.
Today, however, I was running errands for my younger brother with my grandmother, and it was raining quite hard. I was trying to be very careful and didn’t want to hurt either my grandmother, myself, or my mum’s car (which I love & have been so privileged to drive), but I had to pick up my brother from practice, so I tried to get home as soon as possible. I know I could have waited for the rain to let up, but I saw I was cutting it close and decided to go.
As I was pulling out of the parking lot and preparing to turn right onto the highway, another driver turned as well, so I slowed down as he pulled into the left lane before I pulled into the right. He moved over a bit just as I was pulling in, so I tried to move to the right to avoid him and (stupidly, albeit accidentally) went up onto the curb. As I was turning onto the highway, I saw my tire pressure lights come on and pulled over to find that I had torn both right tires.
When we went to the nearby dealership, they told me our car needed two new tires, two new tire sensors, and a wheel alignment (just in case), which added up to ,100. Luckily, there was no damage to the car body or the hubcaps. This is A LOT of money, in my opinion, and we decided to pay cash instead of with insurance in order to avoid a hike in our premiums.
Right now I’m feeling ashamed, embarrassed, and quite guilty for having caused my parents to have to pay an arm and a leg for my foolishness. I don’t know why, but I’m also uncomfortable with my mum’s reaction to the accident (I still almost feel sick about it): instead of being angry about her car & the money she and my dad would have to pay, she was comforting me and saying “it’s okay.” Meanwhile, she told my brothers about the damage and the repair fees, so I’m getting (deserved yet very cruel) criticism from them as well.
I’m so disappointed in myself, and, although they’ve not asked me to do so, I really want to earn money to help pay them back. I’m going to be a high school junior this year, so unfortunately I don’t really have the time to get a job during the week.
Here are some potentially flexible jobs I’ve considered, however:
-Replacing our cleaning ladies for 12 weeks (my mum pays them 0 every 2 weeks when they
come)
-Babysitting for neighbors and family friends
-Starting some sort of business (I’ve been thinking of working with my photography or with hair
accessories)
-Helping my dad with yardwork in order to (somewhat) replace our landscapers
I would, of course, give all profits to my parents in repayment of my present debts.
Could you recommend any other jobs I could do in order to repay them?
Thanks so much!
